Today, on May 4th, we recognise the courage, professionalism and sacrifice of firefighters here in Victoria and across the world.

Every day, firefighters put themselves in harm’s way to protect their communities — responding to fires, rescues and emergencies of all kinds.

This date holds special meaning. May 4th was chosen as International Firefighters’ Day as it is the feast day of Saint Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters. Saint Florian is remembered as one of the first known commanders of a firefighting unit in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, along with his colleagues, while defending the very principles of service and protection that firefighters around the world still uphold today.

We also take a moment to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their communities.

We stand proud. We stand united.

Happy International Firefighters’ Day to firefighters and their supporters everywhere. Thank you for the courage, commitment and dedication you show every day in service of your community.
