Questions are being raised about transparency within Fire Rescue Victoria after reports that staff have been reminded that requests from politicians to visit fire stations must go through official approval channels.

The issue emerged following visits by Nick McGowan, Shadow Minister for Fire Rescue Victoria, who has been speaking with firefighters about pressures facing the service and the realities of frontline operations.

According to reporting in the Herald Sun, an internal communication advised that any requests from Members of Parliament to attend stations should be coordinated through management and communications staff.

For many in the community, the broader question is about openness. Firefighters play a vital role in protecting Victorian communities, and many people believe it is important that those on the frontline can share their perspectives with elected representatives responsible for oversight and policy.

Victorians rely on a strong and well-supported fire service. Ensuring open communication and transparency around the challenges firefighters face is an important part of maintaining public confidence and community safety.
