Today We Remember this Tragic Day – Black Saturday 2009.

We stand in solidarity with all firefighters and emergency service workers from all services and the community, the families and loved ones of the 173 lives lost.

Today we reflect on the profound moment of devastation where extreme weather conditions led to catastrophic fires across Victoria on February 7 2009.

The even serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of bushfires, with the scale of destruction caused by the fire claiming 173 lives, destroying thousands of homes and leaving lasting trauma on affected communities.

Whilst the destruction was immense, Black Saturday also demonstrated remarkable community resilience and unity in the aftermath.

The UFU acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land, and we pay our respect to their Elders, past and present.

The UFU supports the call of First Nations peoples for a Voice to Parliament to be enshrined in the Constitution.
