A SINGLE FIRE SERVICE FOR VICTORIA: SAVING MONEY, SAVING LIVES
Notice of Hearing-
Subsequent to the recent UFU Forums on one Fire Service, the Unions Submission/evidence to the Royal Commission will be heard at 222 Exhibition Street Melbourne.
The Commission will commence at 9.00 am, Monday the 3rd of May.
However it is expected that UFU evidence will not commence to after Lunch.
Victoria has its best opportunity to converge its fire fighting resources into a single service after more than 25 years of inquiries and recommendations have been thwarted by political considerations.
In the wake of the Black Saturday bushfires, Professor Dr David Hayward, dean of the School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning at RMIT University will testify at the Royal Commission as part of the United Firefighters Union’s submission for a single fire service.
Dr Hayward bases his support on economic analysis and town planning issues – but a single fire service also has significant safety implications.
A single fire service would mean a common training system, communications, IT protocols, purchasing guidelines, vehicles and equipment.
Financially Victorians would get better ‘bang for their buck’. Improved efficiency and more professionalism would boost 24/7 fire coverage and lead to faster response times to emergencies.
Dr Hayward is also critical of the MFB-CFA boundary.
